Harley Starter FAQ’s

Why should I buy a 1.4 kilowatt starter when others are 2.0kW?

With dyno results included with every starter, there is no guessowrk or exaggerated claims
 - just the best starter money can buy!

The higher the kilowatt (kW) rating, typically the more the amperage draw goes up. Therefore, on a Harley a 2.0kW starter is not necessarily a good thing because the amp draw is also higher. Harleys have small batteries and the increased amp draw will drain the battery quickly. The important issue is torque output, and the Powermaster 1.4kW is higher torque than the older style 2.0kW starters on the market.

How does torque compare to kilowatts?

Kilowatts (or horsepower) is a measure of two things combined: torque and speed. Torque is the force that causes something to move, and it is expressed as pounds over a certain distance. Kilowatt ratings can be misleading because starters can have very different torque numbers, and yet add up to the same kilowatt number. With that in mind, a starter’s torque rating should be the basis for a buying decision. Get as much as you can!
